Gold Jewelry Guide: Plated, Vermeil, Filled, and Solid Gold Explained

When purchasing jewelry it helps to know the difference between the different types of gold jewelry available. What’s the difference between gold Vermeil and Filled, why is one chain so much more expensive than another, and can I really wear it in the shower? Here is a break down of the different types of gold jewelry, what you can expect to pay, and how they will wear. This should help you make a more informed decision when purchasing pieces you hope to love for a long time.

Gold Plated Jewelry
Gold plated jewelry is the most affordable option. It is created by applying a thin layer of gold onto a base metal, usually brass or copper, through a process called electroplating. This layer is very thin, between 0.5 to 2.5 microns thick. This layer is very susceptible to wearing off through regular use, and should not be exposed to any moisture. This is a great option for trendy pieces that you don’t intend to get a lot of wear out of. Prices can vary, but often range from $20 to $100 depending on the brand and design.

Gold Vermeil Jewelry
Gold vermeil is the next step up from plated. It is made in the same way, but with upgraded materials. The base metal is starling silver, and the plating is at least 2.5 microns thick. The thicker layer of plating increases the durability compared to plated. However, over time the layer can still wear off revealing the base metal underneath. Price points for gold vermeil can range from $50 to $500 depending on gold thickness and design.

Gold Filled Jewelry
Gold filled jewelry consists of a thick layer of gold bonded to a base metal, but unlike electroplating, it’s bonded using heat and pressure. The gold and base metal are pressed together through a series of high-pressure rollers creating a durable bond between the two layers. This process ensures the gold layer is much thicker than gold plated jewelry—often up to 100 times thicker. Gold filled pieces are far more durable and long-lasting, withstanding daily use without showing wear and tear and do not tarnish easily. Gold filled offers the appearance and durability of gold at much lower prices than sold. Gold filled jewelry can cost between $100 to $500 depending on the piece and amount of gold used.

Solid Gold Jewelry
Solid gold jewelry is made entirely of gold and is the highest quality option available. It is often alloyed with other metals to improve its strength and durability, as pure gold (24 karat) is soft and prone to scratches. Solid gold jewelry retains its value over time and can last a lifetime with proper care. The main benefit of solid gold is that it doesn’t tarnish or wear off, making it a long-term investment. However, it is much more expensive than other types of gold jewelry, with prices starting in the hundreds and going into the thousands, depending on the karat and weight of the piece.
